Participants will make two different book structures during this one day bookbinding workshop, one adhesive and one sewn. The Drum-leaf binding is an adhesive structure, developed by Timothy Ely to bind his finished flat paper art so that each page in the book opens flat. In the soft-leather long-stitch binding the signatures are sewn directly onto the cover with decorative stitching on the spine.
No previous bookbinding experience is needed, but the ability to fold paper neatly and accurately, as well as the ability to thread a needle is very helpful.
Please bring a lunch.
The instructor for this workshop is Marcia Watt. She has extensive and lengthy experience in bookbinding and the study of historical book structures. Her award winning work has been displayed widely in the United States and in China.
